How To Start Your Fitness Journey: The 3 Steps To Getting Started and Staying Motivated

Starting your fitness journey can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Anyone of any age and fitness level can begin their own journey to a healthier lifestyle with just a little bit of initiative. Starting your own fitness journey can be challenging but also very rewarding once you see the changes in your body and confidence over the course of time. There will be ups and downs, highs and lows, along this ride toward better health, but as long as you stay focused on the end game then you’ll get there in the end. Getting started on this journey isn’t always simple, however, once you know where to begin it should become much easier. In this blog post, we are going to explore three easy steps to getting started with your fitness journey.

Fitness Journey Step 1: Set your goals

There are no shortcuts when it comes to fitness, so it’s important to know what you are aiming for. Fitness isn’t just about looking good, it’s about being healthy, feeling good, moving well, and longevity.

Once you know what you are aiming for, you can set out a plan to achieve it. What fitness level are you at currently and what exactly do you want to achieve? It’s paramount that you are clear on what the goal is or the journey will tough one. For example, if you want to lose weight, how much? If you want to “get fit” what does that mean, what will you be able to do then that you can’t now?

There are many disciplines you can choose to reach your goals, you could start working with a mobile personal trainer, weight lifting, martial arts, yoga, pilates, and more. There are also a variety of different ways to exercise, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, and the list goes on. All you have to do is choose what works best for you.

Fitness Journey Step 2: What’s the plan

So you have set some goals and that’s great but how are you going to realise them? A goal without a plan is just a dream, I have no idea who said that first but it’s pretty much on the nose in my book, with this in mind let’s see if we can put together a simple way to chart a course to hitting your goals.

The first step is to write down your end goals and then work backward from there, typically your end goal is a big one and is going to take some time to get there, I would suggest breaking this down into smaller, easier to manage goals and then look at what actions you would need to take to reach them, every small goal you hit brings you closer to your end goal and gives you something to celebrate along the way.

There will be many tripping points along the way, some are obvious and others might sneak up on you, I suggest that you think carefully about what might stop you from hitting any of the goals you have set out and see if you can tackle them before they come up.

Fitness Journey Step 3: Stay motivated

There are no shortcuts when it comes to fitness, this is something that takes time and effort. Fitness isn’t just about the number on the scale, but also the confidence it brings through feeling good about yourself. It can be easy to lose motivation along the way, especially when you have lots of other commitments pulling you in different directions.

With all the above being said I know that staying motivated can be tough as at times even when we know what we are doing is for the best it can still be easier to fall off the wagon rather than sticking at it. The key to staying motivated is to keep a positive outlook, celebrate your successes no matter how small, and remember why you started in the first place.

Change requires you to endure some level of discomfort your choice is which discomfort you choose the one that comes with change or the one that comes with staying where you are.

The final word

Getting started on your fitness journey can be tough but as long as you have clear goals, a solid plan to execute them, and keep reminding yourself why you’re on the journey you will get there in the end.
